How to Buy from Motorhome Auctions

Author: Theodore Category: Trailers

Shopping for motorhomes at motorhome auctions can save you between 50 and 80% off of the price of a new motorhome.  Most motorhomes sold at auction have been repossessed by a bank or government entity, either because the original buyer was unable to make adequate payments, or because the vehicle was obtained illegally.  Repossessed motorhomes are often in excellent condition but are being sold at a fraction of their original price simply because banks are anxious to get rid of them.  The downside to buying from a motorhome auction is that you will likely get neither a warranty nor guarantee.  This makes careful research and planning all the more important.

There are a few things you can do to help get the best value.  First, before you plan to bid on a motorhome, you should first attend several auctions.  This will give you a clearer picture of how the auctions function and of how much you can expect to pay for your motorhome.  Next, determine your ceiling bid – the amount above which you will not go – based either on what you can afford or what you are willing to spend.

Third, check the approximate value of the motorhomes you are interested in by looking through RV magazines.  Finally, inspect the vehicle thoroughly.  Check the inside and the outside, under the hood and inside cabinets.  You will not be able to test drive the motorhome, so having a clear picture of its drivability is important.  If you do not personally have the expertise to understand what is going on under the hood, then you would be wise to bring an RV mechanic with you for your inspection.  If you notice any major repairs, subtract the approximate cost of those repairs from your ceiling bid so that you do not spend too much on the overall cost of the vehicle.

With these tips in hand, you should be able to find a great deal on a like-new motorhome. You may also be interested in repossessed rvs or learning how to buy at an rv auction.
