When it comes to living on the road, a 3 way caravan fridge (also known as an RV fridge) is an absolute essential if you are going to enjoy any comforts at all.  Without a caravan refrigerator in your motor home, you lack the capacity to chill or freeze food and drinks.  Life on the road can be challenging enough even without depriving you of luxuries like this!

Purchasing the right recreational vehicle fridge is a tricky business.  There is no shortage of small fridges that are the right size, but not all of them are really suitable.

For use in a travel trailer or a caravan, your best choice is to buy a 3 way refrigerator.  These appliances are extremely versatile, making them ideal for those of us with not fixed address.  They can be powered from three different power sources – the original of the name – which makes them usable almost anywhere.

When staying at more refined caravan or RV parks, or upscale campgrounds, you will likely have access to grid power. One these occasions your caravan refrigerator can be plugged into an outlet to use mains power.

At cheaper RV parks, and more rustic campgrounds – or even in the boondocks – you switch your unit over to utilize LPG.  Depending on the unit it will probably run either propane or butane gas, be sure to check which form of liquefied petroleum gas your unit uses!  An average sized tank of propane, mounted on a trailer hitch, may be able to run a small 3 way camping fridge for two or more weeks.

Finally, if you want to keep your fridge running when you are literally 'on the road' moving between destinations, the 3 way caravan fridge can  temporarily run off of the tow-vehicles 12v DC car battery.  This final option should only be used a stop gap however, as it is hard on your cares electrical system.

Avoid cheap portable fridges that are intended for use around the home.  Unless you will be tied 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to mains power, you will soon find these units lack the flexibility you will need.

While prices for caravan fridges vary greatly, if you will be making regular use of the appliance it is best to spend the extra money and get a quality unit.  Some of the better regarded brands on the marketplace are Electrolux and Dometic.  For premium models look no further than Norcold or the Engel fridge freezer line.
