We are starting to see a revolution in individual transportation which is going to change how we move around. One of the biggest changes is how we power our automobiles in the future. Gasoline has been the fuel of choice because in reality it has been very cheap for the amount of energy received. The problem is we are running out of oil, it only makes sense that there is just so much oil in the ground and eventually we will pump it all out. This means we need to use what oil we do have more efficiently. One way to do this is to switch from gasoline to diesel automatic cars for better fuel efficiency.
Diesel is really a better choice for personal autos for two reasons. First, when crude oil is pumped to the surface it then is transported to a refinery. This chemical plant then transforms the oil into many different products. A process called “cracking” is used to separate the different hydrocarbons by pumping the crude into a big tank and then heating it. The different grades of hydrocarbons separate into different layers with the less desirable grades on the bottom and the more expensive grades on top. Gasoline is fairly high up on the spectrum of refining which means it is harder and more expensive to make. Diesel, on the other hand, is of a lower grade and thus should be cheaper. By using diesel for our fuel we are using a lesser quality oil which leaves the higher quality hydrocarbons for such things as plastics which are also in desperate need.
The other advantage to diesel is it actually contains more usable energy per liter than gasoline. This means for a liter of diesel you can go farther than you can with a liter of gasoline. The diesel burns a little slower in the combustion chamber so less energy is wasted as heat out the tail pipe or into the radiator.
The available car guide gives you many more reasons for choosing diesel over gas if you are interested in maximizing the use of oil to make it last as long as possible.
